The Flags of Afghanistan and Albania: A Tale of Two Nations

Two flags, two very different lifespans

Vexillology is the study of flags, and one of the things it turns up is how differently two national flags can behave over the same stretch of history. Afghanistan's has been redrawn repeatedly. Albania's has hardly moved. Both are doing the same job.

Afghanistan

Black, red and green, each with an assigned meaning: black for the dark past, red for the blood of those who fought for independence, green for hope and prosperity. The central emblem has a mosque and an inscription, marking Afghanistan's Islamic heritage. Successive regimes have altered the flag, and the version above is one of many, but the message of having come through hard things persists across the redesigns.

Albania

Albania's flag is one bold red field and one black double-headed eagle. Red is for bravery and strength. The eagle comes out of Albanian folklore and stands for sovereign power and independence. It has become a unifying symbol particularly for Albanians living abroad, who use it as a reminder of where they are from.

Where they overlap

Both use red, and in both cases it means courage and sacrifice. That is roughly where the similarity ends. Afghanistan's flag records a sequence of regime changes. Albania's records a single continuous claim.

Flags as diplomatic instruments

Both flags project national identity outward, and both have prompted argument, which is what happens when a symbol is attached to a contested history. Designs shift over time while the underlying claim, that this is a nation and these are its values, stays put.

Whether either flag changes again depends on politics neither country controls entirely. Global design influence pulls one way, tradition the other, and flags tend to end up somewhere in between.
