Algeria and Argentina both won independence and both put that fact on a flag, but the two designs argue for entirely different things. This piece looks at what each element was chosen to carry.
Why flags work at all
Vexillology is the study of flags. At bottom a flag represents sovereignty and unity, and it is designed to pull people together around both. The emotional part is real and worth naming: the reaction people have to seeing their own flag is a psychological effect, not a rhetorical one, and it makes flags emotional anchors as much as political emblems.

Argentina

Two independence flags
Put the two together and the difference is in what each country chose to foreground. Algeria's colors point at Islamic and revolutionary history. Argentina's point at sky, purity, and the ambition of a new republic. Both flags mark independence; neither means the same thing by it.
Flags that belong to no country
Not every flag maps to a border. The Pan-African flag and the pride flag both represent communities rather than states, and both have traveled further than most national designs.

Redesign arguments
Flag design is not settled. Countries revise their flags or debate revising them, and the arguments get heated fast. New Zealand's long argument over its national flag and South Africa's post-apartheid change both show what is actually at stake in these debates, which is rarely the graphic design.
